Third session, june 2013.
At last an exhibition's scenography which doesn't close everything down !
...unleashing along the way a number of reflections-in-reflections almost impossible to keep track of - whoever has photographed this building can after that face anything.
Fondation Cartier \ Jean Nouvel
Main image of the series - physically impossible without many contorsions of the camera... and the photographer !
Getting everybody to "pose" right at the same moment was... difficult :)
Probably my favorite of this third session ; shows well the mixing of garden, street, exhibition and real life which was the building's goal.
West exhibition hall, late afternoon.
This is NOT a multi-exposure image but only the result of doubled-up reflections bouncing off between street and garden window panes.
Late in the day ; this lasted about five seconds, two of which made this moment.
East view of the main exhibition hall
(I did order for kids with color-matched T-shirts the day before - and got them !)
Along with two from the previous series, three images from this set were chosen by the Fondation Cartier for the upcoming book celebrating its 30th anniversary (april 2014) ; five more will be used for the second volume (october 2014).
Second session, summer 2012.
Due to the exhibition's scenery... still not able to take the photographs originally planned but I can explore the geography and show the building as the actual exhibition center it really is.
It may not seem so but the intricate proximity of all elements present make the light change very quickly, even during long summer days. Trying but rewarding : all three sessions done so far have entered the Fondation's permanent iconography.
During a ten-minute rainless interlude.
Main exhibition hall, c. 10AM.
This shows well the intricacies of the building : the yellow area below the stairs comes from the exhibition's scenography but the green area above is the reflection of the east side of the garden onto the plexiglass of the library.
West side from the main hall to the smaller, south, hall.
... opposite of the previous view.
The garden, seen from its N-E point.
N to S view next to the entrance.
Seldom seen perspective.
It did mostly rain that day so I did this peaceful closeup.
Larger variant of the garden, seen from its N-E point.
South exhibition hall viewed from the garden.
First session, april/may 2011.
Thanks to Hubert Tonka and authorizations granted by both Jean Nouvel and Hervé Chandès, I was allowed to spend as much time as I wanted photographing the Fondation Cartier in Paris.
This exhibition+offices building proved very difficult to approach : equally dense and transparent, airy and inextricable, it is as violent as it is peaceful... Due to the scenery of the exhibition, all I could work during this first session were the contrasts.
