du Besset - Lyon \ ENSA Clermont-Ferrand (II)
The real session for DBL.
I spent eight days there - this isn't the kind one could run through over a weekend !
A few spots weren't finished yet so I'll be going back a couple of days this winter then a few more days later in the spring 2016 to round up the session - the sun is much too low now and that building deserves at least as much.
Below is most of what was done, first outside, then inside (a few images missing I'll be adding spring 2016).
(series published in de zeen)
From the adjacent vineyard, this shows well the stunning size of this : 100m in length ! The small house in front used to be the director's (when this was a sanatorium).
Very early morning, all backlit... by me : lights had to be turned on manually, one by one ! A variant is planned for spring 2016 : the sun will rise on the other side of the building, allowing me to move further to the right (and that useless fence will be gone, too).
One of two versions made, this must be around 2PM.
The only spot allowing to grasp the width of the ensemble. I knew the light would become hazed after 2PM so this was the right moment (otherwise too harsh). This should be redone next spring (sun setting further West - and that bloody fence will be gone).
From the top of the secondary building, with people I managed to carefully place (with luck) in the right spots. And yes, that's the moon up there !
Same viewpoint as before but just before nightfall, under a rainy sky (and again all lights having been turned on manually, and one by one).
Main entrance view ; library to the left, exhibition hall to the right, classes above.
After a very rainy day during which I made most of the interiors. I wish the rain hadn't stopped because...
... I thus had to pour loads of water with a hose and a small bucket on the floor to get the reflections. Plus the manual lighting of everything again - a very trying shot, and the last image of the session at that !
About 9AM, seconds before the sun hits the lens.
The front hall/classrooms extension linked to the old blade. Perfect moment I precisely calculated during the first day.
About 10AM, a teacher walks in.
About 9AM : blade, library and the white wall hides the top of ground-floor classes.
The blade thrown toward the city and a high shack towering at the top of the (partly) reshuffled gardens.
Third floor, toward the west ; the high shack is hiding like a ghost.
Toward the West and the hill above.
Toward the East and the city below. The old Michelin test tracks rise from the ground like Dune's sand worms did...
This was planned for an evening shot (the sun sets right of the vertical posts) but I couldn't gather enough students for it and the neons didn't work anyway... So I did a quick test the next day in anticipation of the may 2016 remake.
From the parking across the street.
This is a temporary image : the sun needs to rise further east (so : late april at the earliest) and the access atop the secondary building is quite difficult, requiring more pre-paration. Still I managed to get the moon in the shot.
Again a temp image showing the space separating the old and the new ; the old chapel is now an administrative office.
Also a temp image which needs to be made from the inside of the building behind me, one floor up, with a system to attach the camera 50cm off the window (the room wasn't accessible when I did this). But I do like this pale afternoon sun.
... by nature ! From the adjacent gardens, early morning. The mid-day variant is ok as well but I do have a (very) soft spot for early morning sun... one of my favorite symphonies is Haydn's #6 : "The Morning".
...with the secondary building in the shadows, c. 9AM ; a late afternoon variant was made as well.
...having a break. This platform is the continuation of the front entrance.
Taking five from their respective classes (and staying two minutes more just for me).
Two enjoying a sunny break (and staying two minutes more, too).
Utility lane separating the gardens and the bottom of the blade. And an ethereal goddess walked through - goddesses do that, they do, don't they ?
Library to the left, "monumental" stairway to the right, cafeteria/lunch spot center.
Entrance to the left, (unfinished) reception desk and library entrance upfront.
Opposite of the previous images, exit toward the gardens behind me.
Lunch spot, between the main hall and exit to the gardens.
Branching out from the main hall, toward the two auditoriums. Students' posters and cryptic whatevers adorning the walls.
One classroom, next to the lunch spot.
Monumental stairway taking off from the main hall
Toward the two North classrooms, going up...
... and up...
... and up...
and up. There are other images that should be done around this - for may 2016.
Part of the stairway visible from the first floor ; the old blade can be accessed here to the left.
One of the many classes that make the bulk of the blade's space ; this is 1st floor, west...
...and third floor west, too, but the other way around : from a classroom, corridor, balcony, nature.
One of the corner classes... 2nd floor.
... and another, third floor.
East to West, 3rd floor.
East to West, 2nd floor.
Part of the 1934 side stairways which run the whole seven-storeys - very high. You should see this in full-size (nearly 12,000 pixels)... the only next step would be to actually be there.
The very top, East side, secondary building below, city afar.
In between. Btw, this isn't an entrance hall but a fairly constricted space - see how wide I can catch without the perspectives going haywire ?
The small one. (to be redone without the temporary screen)
The big one. (to be redone without the temporary screen)
This area wasn't finished so I could only access three spots... That's one.
That's two, next to the entrance.
That's three, left of the previous image.
